Ahead of the game against Udinese, Montella attends a press conference and gives some thoughts about Milan current situation including Andre Silva, Suso, Conti, Udinese and our president.
On the System
“Sometimes we give too much importance to the system of play. We always play in a similar way. In Vienna we mostly changed our attitude, we were faster on the ball and this allowed us to play well. Playing every three days there will be room for everyone and we will need every player in our squad. I will decide who starts before each game.”Bonucci can play both in a 3 or 4 man defence. He did the same last season with Juventus. Playing in a 3 man defence having a left-footed central defender (like Romagnoli) is important but not essential. Suso is a decisive player who can play both in a 4-3-3 and in a 3-5-2. There will be squad rotation which will involve everyone. It’s not easy to train with all the players when you play every three days, but even so, I am pleased with how we performed in a 3-5-2 so far.”
“Kalinic needs to improve his condition but he played a really good game against Austria Wien. Kessié is an important player for us. If he is fit, he will play, of course, but we have to take into consideration the technical aspects of the game, although I am very happy with how he’s doing. Calhanoglu has to keep working like this. He really has great talent and dedication. He never sits back during the game and also fights to win balls back. André Silva has so much potential. He could become one of the best forwards in Europe. He showed it on Thursday but still could improve, he could be even sharper up front.
“Yesterday was a sad day for all of us. Conti’s surgery went well, I hope he can recover as soon as possible. All the boys are showing him their support. We are very sorry to lose him but we have Abate, who has similar characteristics. Also Calabria can adapt to the role. I am not worried. We could also have someone else to take his place, I have already someone in mind. It could be a defender, a midfielder or even a forward. You will have to wait to find out.
“We have to play each game as if it was the last. We are just at the beginning of the season, we have won two matches and lost one. We are playing two home games in three days and we really have to take home six points. Sometimes you win through technique and tactics but I hope the team will also win through hunger and desire. We can’t be content with just a win. The road is still long. Tomorrow I am expecting a hungry team again, with the desire to win. We all need to take AC Milan back to winning ways.
“On behalf of the team I want to wish our President a happy birthday, we are looking forward to seeing him soon at Milanello”
